Soul Coins in Baldur's Gate 3 – rare, unique items that can be discovered while traveling around the world of the Forgotten Realms. According to the description, they power the infernal engines, but how, and most importantly, why these engines are needed remains a mystery. Each of these coins is valued at 100 gold, but the true value is much higher, because each contains someone’s soul.
In the guide, we will tell you why soul coins are needed in BG3 and how to get them, we will show the location of all available coins. Read on to learn more about the origin of the infernal currency, why it is worth storing the resource and what to spend it on.
What are Soul Coins used for in Baldur's Gate 3?
In Baldurs Gate 3, the Soul Coin is the currency used in the first of the Nine Hells circles, Averno. It was there that the main character happened to visit at the beginning of the game, before the crash of the illithid ship. From the “Treatise on Coins of the Soul” you can learn that to create them, the soul of a creature, its magical and personal essence, is inserted into a minted disk made of hellish iron.
In hell, this currency allows you to recruit mercenaries, buy magical artifacts, and can serve as fuel for infernal mechanisms. Some of the devils and their minions keep the soul coins as a valuable and memorable item. However, almost all of the above is not available to the main character when exploring the world.
In Baldurs Gate, 3 soul coins will be useful if you have them in your squad Karlach. They will allow:
- Get the approval of the she-devil in the second act, which is useful for friendships or novel.
- Increase Karlach's damage in battle, but this will only work if left to her barbarian class or lower your health to low values. Otherwise, only the visual effect will remain.
Perhaps if an expansion of the game comes out that includes Averno, the coins will have an additional purpose. In DnD, you can interact with a soul from a coin in dialogue, but in BG3 this mechanic is not implemented.
How to get Soul Coins in BG3
In total, in all three acts one can find 18 soul coins.
Dark Crypt
Stage of the game: Act I.
To the east of the rune circle “Cliffs by the Road” there is a Chapel, in the dungeon of which are stored 3 soul coins. In a separate guide, read more about all the methods, how to get to the Dark Crypt and it.
Soul Coin #1
Pick up your first coin from one of the sarcophagi in the southern room with traps (X: -294; Y: -310). For safety, you can activate the turn mode in order to have time to avoid death.
Soul Coin #2
In the northwest room, where you will notice the Book of Dead Gods, the next soul coin is hidden (X: -322; Y: -270). She is also in sarcophagus.
Soul Coin #3
The last Soul Coin from the Dark Crypt is in one sarcophagus with Withered. (X: -295, Y: -229)
emerald grove
Stage of the game: Act I.
В emerald grove only available 1 soul coin. It can be obtained from the tiefling refugee standing at the telescope, north of the Emerald Grove Neighborhood teleport.
Soul Coin #4
If you can help Nadir (X: 241; Y: 450) fight off the killer bugbear, you will learn a little more about soul coins and can get the item in dialogue by persuasion or intimidation (DC 5).
Alternatively, the coin can be stolen from a living Nadira or taken from her corpse. Along with rare currency, you will also receive the book “Treatise on Coins of the Soul.”

Stage of the game: Act I.
In the north of the initial ground location, east of Waukeen's Refuge, climb into the building with the surviving paladins associated with the quest Karlach "Hunt down the she-devil". Choose here 1 soul coin.
Soul Coin #5
To pick up an item, you don’t have to go into the house, you can just climb the stairs to balcony, where the soul coin lies (X: 107; Y: 547).
moon towers
Stage of the game: Act II.
Hidden in the location with the Moon Towers 4 soul coins. If you're having trouble resisting a curse or can't get to the dark lands, then separate management.
Soul Coin #6-8
Keeps three coins Lann Tarv (X: -163; Y: -169), gunsmith Absolute, whom you will meet in the main hall of the Lunar Towers. Currency can be stolen or taken from a corpse, which depends on the stage of the quest "Find the Song of the Night", and on which side you play on - “good” or “evil”. However, there is an easier way.
Take Karlach into your team and talk to Lann. It turns out that he kept the coins at the request of a friend named Flo, a cambion from Averno. Listen to stories about each of the souls to get currency and, at the same time, a note from Flo.
The first soul belonged to the sister of the three Baldur brothers named Mavery, who made a deal with Tiamat for love. The second is to a man named Freix from a village near Neverwinter where the famine occurred. He signed a contract with Zariel. The boy Ongir had a third soul, but almost nothing is known about him.
Soul Coin #9
A little east of the main entrance to the Moon Towers, go through heavy oak doors to the underground room Customs.
After a perception check, use the button on the wall to go into a secret room with a soul coin on the table (X: 299; Y: -716).
lower city
Stage of the game: Act III.
In the Lower Town you can get 4 soul coins.
Soul Coin #10-12
In the north of the Lower City, find a locked Grushka's house (X: 30; Y: -99), associated with the quests "Find the Clown Blob" and "Investigate the Murders". Find the first soul coin in the mailbox.
Next, break the boards blocking the door, and then gain access to the building. In the room not far from the corpse you will find hidden under the boxes Luke, leading to the basement. The age will need to be cracked with a manual dexterity check (15 DC).
Once you find yourself in Grushka's Basement, go to the next room and in the located in the wall safe (15 KS) take 2 soul coins. Choose with them Short sword (+2) with additional necrotic damage.
Soul Coin #13
Off the coast in the north of the Lower Town there is Filgrave mansion, swarming with powerful enemies. There are several ways to get into the building:
- by Mystical Scavenger quest with Trumbo's search;
- by breaking open the stone wall in the west of the house (DC 25);
- by climbing inside through a hole covered with boxes located to the east of the building. For this method, you can use a disguise spell and turn into a low race. From the basement, go up to the desired room and you will go straight to the place with the coin.
If you use one of the first two methods, then you will have to by the monsters on the first floor by climbing up the stairs.
Using the mechanics of stealth, you will get to the desired room on the floor above, the door to which you will have to break open (DC 15). In the eastern part of the second floor of the Filgrave mansion, in one of the piles with entrails, there is 1 soul coin.
House of Hope
Stage of the game: Act III.
In the devilish House of Hope, the teleport to which is located in the Lower City, there are also 5 soul coins. Raphael’s mansion is associated with quests such as “Free Orpheus”, “Save Hope” and the Helsik quest from “The Devil’s Share”.

Soul Coin #14-18
Rare currency hidden in Raphael's safe behind a painting in the bedroom, but the main entrance to the room is blocked by a Mysterious Power Curtain.
Exit to the eastern balcony and jump from it over the stones to Raphael's bedroom. Characters with a strength rating of 8 units will have to use movement spells. Then there will be three options:
- fight with Haarlep - the enemy uses a charm spell;
- get through covertly past the incubus - we recommend using Astarion or another hero with high agility;
- reach an agreement to make a deal with Haarlep - talk to him and agree to all his proposals (does not approve: Wyll), after which you can move freely around the bedroom.
If you do not want to interact with the incubus, Haarlep, activate stealth mode (check with 18 KS) and watch the red area. Walk around the bedroom area clockwise to reach a painting with a safe behind it.
As you approach the painting “Raphael Brings the Flame,” you can make a save, because if you fail to disarm the trap (DC 20) and then try to open the safe, several demons will appear, and with them Haarlep himself will become hostile.

How to use soul coins
Since the Soul Coin can power infernal engines, to interact with it, place the item in your inventory Karlach — it is the only one with such a mechanism inside. Then use the item for her, which will give the warrior a condition "Devil's Wrath". If you want to use the coin in battle, keep in mind that this will consume a bonus action.
According to the buff, attacks Karlach will begin to apply additional 1-4 units of fire damage, but provided that it is in rage or an indicator of it health does not exceed 25%. The state is maintained until long rest, therefore, if desired, the buff can be kept almost constantly, if you do not abuse long rests.
There is one additional interaction with soul coins that does not provide new information, but it is rather non-obvious. Hold the item in your inventory, after which you can hear sounds from souls imprisoned inside the hellish metal.
