How to start the quest Free the Artist

Oscar Fevras at Waukeen Shelter

To begin the quest "Free the Artist", you need to find a character named Oscar Fevras in Baldur's Gate 3. In the first act, he is located in the Zhentarim hideout, which can be reached in the early stages of the game. Head north from the Infested Village, enter the Waukeen Shelter and turn left towards the stables: behind the boxes there is a door.

Inside the room you will meet a guard who will ask for a . There are several options for the development of events:

  • If Rugan is on the quest "Find the missing cargo" survived, then the to enter the shelter will be known.
  • The Detect Thoughts spell will help you find out the .

Once you figure out the , you can go to the hatch at the end of the room. Go down and go to the far left side of the room. Behind the cabinet you will see a age to the Zhentarim Vault, the path to which will be blocked Zaris:

  • If earlier Rugan survived, then the girl will recognize the heroes and turn off all the traps on the way down.
  • Zaris can be persuaded to give way peacefully.
  • If you fail to reach an agreement with the leader of the Zentov squad, you will have to by or neutralize all the traps.

On the lower level, talk to Brem and agree to paint the portrait to begin the quest Free the Artist.

Free the Artist in Baldur's Gate 3 Walkthrough

The quest chain lasts throughout Acts 1 and 3. First of all, it is necessary to rescue the artist from captivity, and at the final stage - to help Oscar and his wife, Lady Jannat, get rid of the ghosts in the estate.

Help Oscar escape

First you need to rescue the artist from the Zhentarim hideout. There are several options on how to do this:

  • Buying an Oscar for 1000 gold is the most expensive, but also the easiest option.
  • Bargain with Brem - this requires ing a Persuasion or Intimidation check [KS - 15]: The purchase price will be reduced to 600 gold.
  • Convincing Brem to release Oskar is a free option, but you'll have to a Persuasion or Intimidation check [KS - 20].

For his release, Oscar will promise a high reward, which will be paid by Lady Jannat, his beloved. However, to receive the reward, you will have to go to Baldur's Gate.

Find Oscar in Baldur's Gate

The quest will continue in the third act, where you will need to find the Jannat estate, located in the west of the Lower City, right above the Foundry.

Lady Jannat's estate on the map

Before entering, you will meet the dragonborn: talk to him and find out that all the staff of the estate are on vacation, so you can freely enter through the front door. The room with Oscar is located on the third floor: to get to it, you need to keep moving along the right side of the building:

  • Find the stairs to the second floor and enter the right door;
  • Go up to the third floor and enter the room closest to the stairs.

In the room you will meet Mrs. Jannat, begging for mercy, and the obsessed Oscar, who wants to kill her. The woman will ask you to stop the man, but save his life, so before the battle switch to non-lethal attacks. It is enough to stun Oscar himself - there is no need to touch nearby ghosts. To avoid the fight altogether, you can use a potion or an invisibility spell, and in this state knock out the character.

When Oscar is unconscious, talk to Lady Jannat. It turns out that after being rescued from the Zhentarim hideout, the artist painted a portrait of his benefactor, so Jannat recognizes the character. The woman will tell you that the estate is filled with ghosts and she needs help to cure the possessed Oscar.

During the dialogue, it will become known that before falling into this state, Oscar did not leave the workshop on the top floor for days. Take it out of the artist's pocket key and go to the room to the right of Jannat's chambers.

Explore the workshop in the Jannat estate

It is better to send one hero to Oscar's chambers and leave the rest below. On the way to the workshop, you will meet 6 Cursed Skulls: they can take away a lot of health. To destroy enemies, you will need to hit more 50 units of damage per hit. There are several ways to deal with opponents:

  • Take the most powerful character and destroy the skulls, inflicting maximum damage on them: strengthening spells and potions will help with this.
  • Attack skulls with a spell Remove Curse (unlocks on the third priest circle). Since there are only 6 skulls, the spell will also have to be used 6 times.
  • By the skulls using any of the teleportation spells. For example, it will do Misty Step, which opens at the third level for sorcerers and wizards.

Next, open the secret door in the workshop by combining Oscar's painting with the easel.

Behind the door you will find a painting of Oscar's former lover and a letter from Mystical Scavenger, which states that Oscar tried to his deceased girlfriend Kerry: due to experiments with spells, the house was filled with ghosts. Take the letter to Jannat and she will ask you to go to the Mystical Carrion.

Find the Mystic Scavenger

The mystical scavenger is in Filgrave Mansion, in the south of the Lower City, near the Landfill Shore teleport. Earlier, Jannat provided the for the building, but if for some reason the code is unknown, then the door can be hacked.

Obtain the Torch of Cancellation

Speak to the Mystic Scavenger to receive the Torch of Cancellation. At this stage of the task there are several options:

If you decide to help find the missing servant Trumbo, then go up to the third floor: to avoid opponents, use an invisibility potion. Find Portrait of a Beggar and the magic check [CS-15], after which you will receive a letter that will help you find the servant of the Mystical Scavenger.

Trumbo is located on the pier, northeast of the Filgrave Mansion. Go into the small house and examine the closet, where you will find the servant of the Mystical Scavenger. Then there are two options:

  • Kill Trumbo, completing the quest and receiving the Torch of Cancellation.
  • Help Trumbo kill the Mystic Scavenger.

If the latter option was chosen, search the body of the Mystical Scavenger and pick up a key that will allow you to open the chest in the recess of the room.

If the quest with Trumbo has already been completed previously, then the Torch of Undoing should be in your inventory. In this case, throw it on the ground and pick it up again to update the quest log. If there is no Torch, then talk to Trumbo in the mansion. He will allow you to search the Mystical Scavenger's things, among which you will find the desired item.

Destroy the cursed portrait

Return to the Jannat estate, go up to the top floor, to Oscar's workshop, and burn the portrait of his former lover using the Torch of Cancellation.

Decide Oscar's fate

After the painting is destroyed, go downstairs to Jannat’s room: you will see that the woman is lying unconscious, and next to Oscar stands the ghost of his lover, Carrie Evenfield, who is going to kill the artist. There are three options for the development of events:

  • Rescue Oscar peacefully: Talk to Kerry and convince her to leave Oscar alone. You will have to a test of persuasion or intimidation [KS – 15]. Next, you need to find out the truth about her death and about her connection with Oscar, using persuasion, intimidation or deception [KS - 18]. If you successfully complete all checks, Kerry will leave peacefully.
  • Kill the Ghost: Attack Kerry as soon as you enter the room. Kill her and the tormented souls she summons, then Oscar will remain alive.
  • Let Oscar Die: Let Kerry kill Oscar. When Lady Jannat wakes up, she will be furious and will not give the promised reward.

Awards

The award can only be won if Oscar survives. Go up to the artist's chambers on the top floor and talk to him, after which Oscar will paint a portrait of the currently selected character. Before the conversation make a quick save. Sometimes Oscar does not understand what kind of hero is in front of him, and may accidentally paint a portrait of another character, or even give away a black square. Try to leave all the characters except the main one in the camp, and then talk to Oscar. Perhaps then you will get the portrait you need the first time.

The portrait can only be placed horizontally? throwing it out of inventory, in order to see it, the maximum you can put it on is a table in the camp. Maybe there is some way to rotate the model, so that you can at least put it on a shelf?

I created my character and this Artist doesn’t want to draw my portrait, he constantly draws Shadowheart. Even when she is not in the squad. Even when everyone was kicked out of the squad
