Save Wanru in third act, in the Lower City: in Baldur's Gate you will face the consequences of choosing between Aunt Ethel and Myrina, thanks to which you will find victims of the witch and meet old acquaintances.
In this guide, we'll tell you how to start and complete the Rescue Wanru quest in BG3 to help the Survivors, explain how to catch a voodoo doll, create a hag's doom, find the witch's lair and kill Aunt Ethel again.
How to Help Survivors in Baldur's Gate 3
In order to help the Survivors, you will need to find their current hideout and destroy the swamp witch's spy.
How to start the Help the Survivors quest
To start the Help the Survivors quest, you need to get a tip on the group against the hag in any way, so study:
- Poster among the announcements at the entrance to the Lower City at the Basilisk Gate teleport;
- Note "Report on Old Harlow" in the rosewood desk in "The Confused Mermaid" (you can immediately recognize Aunt Ethel disguised as Captain Grizzly).
According to the information on the poster, proceed to Barren's Coop, located above the rune circle “Junkyard Shore”.
Pick the lock on the building (KS - 10) - it will be empty inside, but from the pieces of paper “Notice of Eviction” and “Barely Readable Letter” you will learn that you should then go to Old Garlow’s house.
Go to Old Garlow's house
There are two ways to get to Old Garlow's house:
- Break open the front door (KS - 15);
- Enter from the west side and destroy the cabinets blocking the hole in the wall.
As soon as you enter the room, a dialogue will start with the Survivors who need to be convinced (CS - 15) or intimidate (KS – 15) to prove peaceful intentions. If successful, they will ask you to remove the curse imposed by the witch from Mairina.
Cure Mairina
On the second floor of Old Garlow's house, find Myrina in the guise of a sheep. Activate the Animal Communication skill and talk to the enchanted girl, alternatively you can read the "Trampled Diary" on the table to learn about the source of the enchantment.
The voodoo doll is giggling in the northeast corner of the room - cast a spell on it or Mairin "Removing the Curse", known to the bard or priest. If you attack a doll, the “sheep” will be damaged.
Defeat Yatlo and the hag's minions
As soon as Mairina returns to her human form, the dragonborn Yatlo, who serves the hag, will run into the room - it was he who sent the curse on the girl.
Kill the redcap and search him to get a potion of superior healing, a note, and the key to Ethel's lair. The latter will open the hag's door in Baldur's Gate 3.
Talk to Mayrina and find the safe
Enter into dialogue with Mairina after the death of the red cap Yatlo to begin the quest “Avenge the Survivors.”
Go down to the first floor and take out safe behind the stairs The Tear-Stained Journal, Dried Fairyflower Ash, and The Hunter's Guide to Hags. Read the last book to learn the recipe for Hag's Bane.
How to make Hag's Bane
Hag's Bane is crafted in the Alchemy section. Open the “Grenades” tab and click on the desired item to create a potion from two ingredients:
- Essentsiya - any will do; if necessary, it can be removed in the appropriate tab from forest stone, night light, and so on.
- Dried fairy flower - can be obtained from the safe along with the Hag's Bane recipe.
How to save Wanru in Baldur's Gate 3
You can save Vanra if you enter the hag’s lair and fight her: the easiest way is to do this in parallel with completing the quest Avenge the Survivors. Please note that if you do not talk to Laura, you will not receive rewards for saving the girl.
How to start the quest Save Vanru
To start the quest to Save Wanru, you need to take the quest from her mother, who you will meet arguing with Firefist in the Barracks at the Basilisk Gate. Laura will tell you that her daughter disappeared in the Confused Mermaid Tavern.
Examine the Confused Mermaid
Head to the southeast corner of the second floor of the Confused Mermaid, where Captain Grizzly is standing - she is actually a hag in disguise. To get a significant advantage in the fight with Aunt Ethel, you can ignore this stage and immediately go down to her lair.
If you previously made a deal with the hag, you can stay on her side and not save the girl, for which Ethel will help in the task "Gathering of Allies".
"Captain Grizzly" will offer to kill Laura and promise to pay 3000 gold for it. If she refuses, Ethel will reveal her true appearance and reveal that she swallowed Vanru to create a new hag from her. After the conversation, a battle will begin, and Ethel will hide in the basement of the tavern.
Where to find Aunt Ethel and the Hag's Lair
Go down to the basement of the Confused Mermaid through either of the two doors in the southeast part of the tavern.
In the basement, jump on the barrels to get to the ledge, where you recognize an illusory wall - go through it.
Go past the double doors using the key to Ethel's lair, and you will find yourself in a space with a huge number of traps.
Several hag-subordinate Masks are wandering around the swamp area and the real Captain Grizzly. You can leave the characters alive, but they will the battle on the side of the hag, which will make the battle more difficult (especially if you decide to keep them alive again). After killing the mobs, you will receive the Key to vault No. 1 in the ing Chamber from one of the bodies, and treasure from the captain.
The safest thing to do is turn right after entering the hag's lair and walk along the planks straight to the witch's room - the door leading into it is labeled "Wooden Wall" (KS - 20). Right in front of the age there is a tripwire that will have to be byed or neutralized.
How to kill a hag
To kill a hag in Baldur's Gate 3, you need to destroy three pearly bellflower, growing in the corners of her lair. All mushrooms must be eliminated in one move, otherwise, after receiving fatal damage, the witch will be able to resurrect.
Bells have 55 health points and are also immune to psychic and poison damage. To make the battle easier, we recommend switching to turn mode before it starts and destroying the mushroom in the northeastern corner of the basement. Immediately after this, a hag will appear on the mushroom circle, provoking a battle.
Aunt Ethel in the third act has level 11, so if problems arise, return to the quest later. Below we describe the main points in the battle:
- The hag calls upon her copy, which makes the battle much more difficult.
- Spread out the group: Firstly, the bells are located at different points in the basement. Secondly, the witch and her copies can use powerful chain spells and area attacks.
- If you didn't kill masked pirates on the way to the lair, they will appear along with the hag - you will get a point for saving them inspiration for a soldier.
- Spell "Seeing the Unseen", area attacks or periodic attacks will help reveal a hag that has become invisible.
If you are going free Wanruthen be sure to do it until Ethel's death.
How to use Hag's Bane
Throw the Hag's Bane potion at the real Aunt Ethel (not her copy) so that she will spit out Vanra, after which the girl will run away to safety. The easiest way to do this is at the very beginning of the battle, if you don’t talk to Captain Grizzly and immediately head to the witch’s lair to destroy the mushrooms.
How to defeat a hag without using a potion
If it is not possible to use Hag's Bane, then bring Ethel's health to a low level and finish her off non-lethal attack - knocking out a witch will count as her death. After selecting a replica "Rip open the hag's belly and get Vanru" you can finish off the swamp fairy.
Awards
After saving the girl, find her in the swampy part of the hag's basement and talk to her, as a result Vanra will run away to her mother in their house in the Lower City. For a good deed, heroes with a novice origin will receive points inspiration.
Proceed to the building with Laura and Vanra, located north of Old Garlow's house. Discuss what happened with your mother, for which you will receive:
- Rapier Duelist's Prerogative with the “Challenge to Duel” ability, which inflicts bleeding on the enemy. The Duelist's Enthusiasm action is an additional melee attack if the wielder is using only one weapon.
- Wind Rider Amulet - Allows the owner to take the form of a cloud and use the Gust of Wind spell.
For completing the mission Help the Survivors, Mairina will give you Staff of Interruption, which grants the owner a magical skill that has a chance to cancel an enemy spell.
Pick it up from the hag's body Ring of Fairy Sparks, useful for
After completing all the errands, do not forget to visit Myrina in the house of Old Garlow. If she remained in the first act together with her husband, then in the third chapter you can convince her to let him go (KS - 10), because he will not be the same.
For the quest Avenge the Survivors, Mairin will give out Fairy Imitation Amulet, granting advantage on Wisdom, Intelligence, and Charisma checks.
How to fix the bug with Vanra's salvation
After turning the witch into hag form in The Confused Mermaid, her health may be reduced to zero, preventing the quest from continuing. In this case, try to heal Ethel, try to heal Captain Grizzly before she turns into a hag, or go break the bells in the witch's basement.
We hope our article helped you understand how to save Vanru in Baldurs Gate 3, help the Survivors and avenge them. If anything remains unclear or problems arise during the quest, write about it to comments. In the corresponding section of the site you can find other Baldur's Gate 3 guides.
When the hag drank the potion, Varna came out of her dead, the quest ended immediately and her mother was still looking for her. But when I chose the method of knocking out the hag and cutting her stomach, I immediately got both a living girl and the approval of the squad. Varna did not run far, she was in sight, I could not immediately approach her because the fight was going on, so I gave her protection in the form of a shield a couple of times, just in case. But it seems that none of the enemies paid attention to her. In the end, when the fight was over, I approached her, and then found her at her mother's. Everything went well.
I cut open the hag's stomach, the girl is alive, but she runs away not to the swamp, but straight through the doors and then she is nowhere to be found.
I also had a bug with the age: after I throw a bottle at Hag, the girl runs out and is nowhere to be found. She seems to be saved, but her mother does not find her, and she is not there. where she should be based on this walkthrough. If you have some kind of area attack that the girl has to run through, like a death cloud, then. along the way, he dies and disappears without a trace.
I realized what was happening after a few s. You need to go to her immediately (!) as soon as you kill Ethel, and try to ensure that there is nothing dangerous on the ground, you don’t even need to search the corpses yet - after a few moves she simply disappears. After you find her, she will hum in the corner and run away again, you can do the rest - she is saved and will be waiting for you with her mother, who will make you rich.
I completed the quest, saved the girl, but I started the quest by talking with the survivors, and not with her mother, in the end I got nothing, and when I go to my mother’s house, she is alone there and if I go into the house, she gets angry at me
Killed the hag before he took the Survivors quest from the leaflet, respectively, before meeting them, then he came to them and met the unenchanted Mairin, Yalto was dead, Wubb had the “ethereal whisper” effect, but she is not aggressive, and Kled is just Kled ) In the end, they gave me a rapier, a ring, an amulet, but they clamped the staff. The most important thing is that the quest with the Survivors was not completed even after receiving the amulet
Upd: I loaded up and went to the Survivors before I visited Barren's Chicken Coop - the quest was not completed, the mark remained on the Chicken Coop. I'll keep you posted
after finishing off the hag with a non-lethal attack, she simply vomited up the varna, the already dead varna
Hello. It’s strange, it shouldn’t work like that - maybe the hag had some kind of periodic damage that prevented her from being knocked out? Or did this happen precisely when the hag was knocked out, can you tell me?
tried the same thing about six times, burps already dead ((( (I can’t figure out where the f*****l ingredient is) came back in the safe empty (((( ok I’ll put the quest aside, maybe I’ll get lucky I’ll find what I need
They could easily lose by simply converting alchemical ingredients to create potions. Unfortunately, the “force” method really doesn’t work for some people or only works a few times. If you definitely turned on the ive “knockout” ability, then it is better to use regular weapon attacks, and not in an area or not with magic damage. Some people are hampered by equipment that increases damage, others forget about the ive abilities of illithids.
